What Kind of Wood is My Floor Made Of?

Each hardwood species has unique characteristics.

For example, every species has a specific hardness rating, graining, and coarseness. Explore domestic and exotic hardwood favorites including:

  • Hickory
  • Oak
  • White Oak
  • European White Oak
  • Maple
  • Red Maple
  • Birch

Each hardwood species has varying graining, characteristics, and hardness ratings. For example, maple hardwood has a straight, consistent grain, while red oak has wavy lines in its graining.

Both engineered and solid wood floors are available in various species, stains, finishes, and styles. Be sure to do your research to be certain your hardwood species has a hardness level that works in the room you’re installing it in.

What Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

The primary difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring is how the planks are constructed.

  • Solid hardwood flooring is made of natural hardwood cut from trees and carved into one plank. There are no changes from the initial tree to the finished product. Solid hardwood floors can be refinished time and time again but aren’t compatible with extreme humidity and moisture. They can’t be used below grade for this reason, and most aren’t compatible with our summer season.

  • Engineered hardwood flooring has the look of solid hardwood, but with extra support and stability. Engineered hardwood planks contain up to seven layers of real wood, with its top layer a piece of premium wood. With its layered construction, engineered planks offset wood’s natural tendency to expand or retract.

For Louisiana living, engineered hardwood flooring is the clear winner here. It fares fine above and below grade. It can manage the changing seasons. Because if it’s construction, it resists moisture better than solid hardwood and won’t buckle from changes in weather or humidity. Certain types of engineered hardwood floors are even 100% waterproof!

One shortfall to engineered hardwood, however, is that it can’t be refinished repeatedly like solid wood. At best, your engineered hardwood flooring can be refinished once or twice in its lifetime.

Where Can I Install Hardwood Floors?

Hardwood floors are not recommended for kitchen & bath use.

For those rooms, consider a hardwood alternative like luxury vinyl plank, laminate, or wood-look tile.

Engineered hardwood floors can be installed just about everywhere else. Enjoy these beautiful, sensible floors in rooms like:

  • Bedrooms
  • Hallways
  • Living Rooms
  • Stairs
  • Entryways
  • Home Offices
  • Dens
  • Family Rooms
  • Retail Shops
  • Meeting Rooms

Can I Install My Own Hardwood Floor?

Hardwood installation is one of those situations where “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” applies! Here’s why:

Professional hardwood installation is usually your safest. In most cases, your product warranty requires it as a condition of future coverage. Sometimes, local building codes require it as well. It’s a risky decision to self-install.

The process of hardwood installation is difficult, grueling, and can quickly go wrong. It involves careful preparation, precise measuring, and plenty of special tools that most of us don’t have on the ready.

Our in-house flooring installers are masters of their craft and are familiar with the unique needs of local homeowners.
